Tanzania, East Africa’s largest country, with almost a third of its territory protected for conservation has some fo the best national parks for wildlife viewing on African continent, Tanzania is one of the top safari destinations.

Nature’s biggest show

Tanzania has 3 main areas in the north of the country, the Tarangire National Park, the Ngorongoro Conservation Area and the Serengeti National Park where the Great Migration takes place.

Tarangire National Park offers a chance to witness the Big 5, Tanzania’s largest concentration of elephant, and over 500 bird species. Despite being less popular than the Serengeti, it is perfect for travellers seeking tranquillity and ample space. The park features breathtaking views of granite ridges, river valleys, woodlands, savannahs, and swamps.

The Ngorongoro Conservation Area is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is one of the largest volcanic calderas in the world, which remains inactive and today is known as ‘Noah’s ark’ for the impressive diversity of emblematic species of African wildlife that can be found inside.

Each year, the Serengeti hosts one of the biggest natural spectacles on Earth: the Great Migration. More than one and a half million wildebeest, zebras and gazelles cross the plains to their new feeding areas, at the same time resulting in a moveable feast for the lions, cheetahs, hyenas and crocodiles lying in wait around the Mara river. Those who’ve witnessed this event call it a once in a life time experience.

The Serengeti covers an astounding 15,000 km2, and while the exact areas we explore will depend on the season as we follow the steps of the Great Migration. This is a one of a kind safari, letting you experience first hand moments worthy of a National Geographic or Discovery Channel documentary.

The wonder and excitement of a Serengeti safari can be enjoyed in the low season when fewer tourists crowd the majestic landscapes. From June to October, the Great Migration crosses back and forth over the Mara River, a spectacular sight, but also the busiest time of the year. Marvel at cheetah on termite mounds surveying the landscapes for prey, elephant herds on vast plains, and other fantastic wildlife.

A Northern Tanzania safari can also be combined with other experiences by Planeta Azul such as Gorilla Trekking or Zanzibar.

Southern Tanzania has 2 main and little-known safari areas. Nyerere National Reserve and Ruaha National Park. In these parks are some of the most impressive species of nature and wildlife on the continent.

Off the beaten track

Access difficulties in the past have probably been reasons why both the Selous Reserve and Ruaha National Park today still remain largely unknown to the vast majority of travelers which makes the safari experience truly wonderful. Both for the beauty of their landscapes and for the diversity of fauna that inhabits these regions, they are two places where safaris deserve to be carried out.

The Nyerere Reserve (formerly Selous) is one of the largest protected areas on the planet, and within its borders lives one of the largest populations of African elephants on the entire continent. In its extension of more than 50,000 km2, you will discover a diversity of habitats: forests of miombo trees, meadows, swamps and marshes, populated by a very varied fauna. Here you will find elephants, hippos, giraffes, cheetahs, lions, kudus, sable antelope, buffalo and wild dogs, as well as 350 different species of recorded birds.

Less extensive, but no less diverse, is the Ruaha National Park which occupies 13,000 km2, and is one of the few places in the world to see native species such as the Roan antelope, as well as kudu, elephants, lions, leopards, cheetahs, crocodiles and up to 571 types of birds.

Within Ruaha lies the Usangu Wetland and is a largely unexplored 6,000 km2 wilderness area.

Usangu is one of the last wild, remote and most unknown natural spaces in Africa. In 2022, the only camp in this area, Usangu Expedition camp, was opened with the purpose of channeling all efforts in the recovery and protection of these wetlands that are key to the entire river system of the Great Ruaha and that are in danger.

In Usangu you will find herds of hundreds of antelopes: topis, sable antelopes, roan antelopes, elans and reduncas. In some cases, all the species move together, which offers unforgettable observations.

Southern Tanzania can be combined with a few days of relaxation on the beaches of Zanzibar.
